Like the XL6, Suzuki Ertiga now comes with a mild-hybrid engine
A few weeks ago, Suzuki officially revealed the 2022 XL6 Hybrid. Not only did it receive a mild-hybrid (MHEV) powertrain, but the 6-seater SUV-styled MPV also got an exterior update, a more stylish interior, and more standard features across the range.
While it did impress us, we were also curious as to where the facelifted Ertiga is. Remember, Suzuki shared last month that they were going to reveal the new (upgrade only) Ertiga with a hybrid engine, a new 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as a flashier appearance.
Fortunately, the wait is over as Maruti Suzuki has taken the covers off the 2022 Ertiga. Sporting a snazzier exterior along with an upgraded cabin, the 7-seater MPV gets a much-needed refresh. But first, let’s talk about its new powertrain.
Like the XL6 launched a few weeks back, the 2022 Ertiga for India is now powered by the next-generation 1.5-liter K15C DualJet inline-four with Smart Hybrid Technology. The mild-hybrid engine produces a total system output of 104 PS at 6000 rpm with 137 Nm of torque at 4400 RPM. This means the new motor produces 1 PS more but 1 Nm less of pull.
While it may not have received a notable increase in power, the mild-hybrid setup does mean the Ertiga now benefits from fuel-saving features. From a start/stop idling system and brake energy regeneration that can recharge the hybrid system, the 2022 Ertiga can sip less fuel than its non-hybrid predecessor. And like the XL6, the Ertiga now also comes with the torque-assist that provides faster acceleration under load.
Don’t expect to find a 4-speed auto as the 2022 Ertiga has been equipped with a new 6-speed automatic complete with paddle shifters. Suzuki says that combined with the mild-hybrid system, the A/T version can achieve 20.3 km/l. When fitted with the 5-speed manual gearbox, it can do better at 20.51 km/l.
As mentioned earlier, the 2022 Ertiga also received some exterior and interior updates. Starting with the former, the MPV gets a bolder front grille with new metal accents. The bumper comes with a sportier lower air intake. The MPV is even equipped with new 15-inch machined two-tone alloy wheels that further highlight the Ertiga’s edgier appearance. Last but not least is a subtle chrome garnish on the tailgate.
Inside, the stylish MPV continues to feature the beige-colored interior finish as its predecessor. What’s new, however, is the dark wood trim and automatic climate control system. It also gets restyled gauges on the instrument panel that now come with a black and blue colorway. Perhaps the most important upgrade inside the 2022 Ertiga can be found at the center of the dashboard. It’s a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display that is fitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. It even gets Bluetooth, USB, Aux, and AM/FM radio connectivity.
Safety-wise, the 2022 Ertiga comes with the following; anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, hill-hold assist (AKA hill-start control), reverse camera, rear parking sensors, cruise control, speed-sensing door locks, and 4 airbags (front and front-side mounted).
With the 2022 Suzuki Ertiga now available in India, we might not have to wait long for its arrival in ASEAN. But will Suzuki Philippines launch it with mild-hybrid tech in the future? And will it continue to come from Suzuki’s Cikarang plant in Indonesia?
